How is PRP Therapy Performed

PRP is a simple painless procedure performed at Comprehensive Healthcare as an outpatient procedure. We perform an autologous blood draw similar to a routine blood test. The blood is placed in a centrifuge which spins the blood at a very high speed for approximately 15mins. This causes the blood to separate into 3 layers. The top layer contains plasma, the middle layer often referred to as the “Buffy Coat” contains platelets, and the bottom layer consists of red blood cells. The top 2 layers are siphoned off and the red blood cells are then discarded. Platelets are known for blood clotting but also contain hundreds of proteins called growth factors that promote the healing of tissue. The Platelet Rich Plasma is then injected into the injured joint, ligament, muscle, or tendon under needle-guided imagery.

How Long Does the Procedure Take?

The entire procedure including the collection of the Platelet Rich Plasma usually takes less than 1 hour. The number of treatments needed in Altamonte Springs vary based on your specific condition. On average we find that 2-6 treatments are needed over time.

What to Expect After Receiving PRP Therapy

The PRP injection is relatively painless. You may experience mild discomfort and sometimes a small amount of pain due to the stimulation of the healing process. We will provide you with a post-procedure protocol to follow to ensure proper healing of your specific joint. Most patients begin to feel less pain and improved function within 4-6 weeks of receiving PRP therapy.
